Contemporary jewellery designs breathe new life into peranakan wedding tradition
Despite elaborate Peranakan weddings becoming less common these days, innovative jewellers are helping to revive the tradition with modern designs that appeal to younger generations.
With a diverse range of intricate pieces on offer, including earrings in white gold with unheated Ceylon star blue sapphires, diamond pendants, Kerosong brooches, and pink gold and marquise-cut diamond rings, these designs are appealing to a new generation of Peranakan brides who may previously have been tempted away from a traditional wedding.
While many Peranakan couples are not reverting back to the whole 12-day ceremony custom, a significant amount of them are incorporating traditional elements in their weddings, particularly when it comes to their choices of jewellery. Thanks to the continuous endeavours of a group of resourceful jewellers, the colour and vibrancy of Peranakan wedding traditions live on.
